Iranian underground bands could be seen as a sign of change in Iran and the birth of a new alternative thinking. In the late 1990s Iranian rock emerged from homemade guitars, and during the past few years Iranian rap music discovered new rhythmic lyrics.

As part of the celebrations of the 800th birthday of the world's most renowned Sufi poet Rumi, some of the most prominent young Iranian artists get together in an attempt to re-visit his philosophy and poetry with performances from classical Persian and hip-hop fusion artists Reveal & Simorgh, and rappers Erfan and Entegham.

  •  Simorgh Performance at King's College London (Date: 25/11/2005)

Simorgh is a group which formed out of several UK based Iranian students meeting occasionally to play music since mid-2004. Each member of the group has his own unique musical background, which means a variety of musical tastes, and styles, within the group. Through combining different genres and playing styles Simorgh have arrived at a unique style, which is a blend of traditional Iranian music, Electronic atmospheric music, taking motifs and ornamentations from other genres such as Rock and Urban music. A typical Simorgh performance will include original material written and arranged by members of the group, as well as improvised pieces, and new interpretations of Traditional and Folk Iranian melodies. There is a healthy mix of the microtonal scales based on the Iranian dastgah system, and the more conventional western tempered scales and polyphony. All this is bought together by energetic rhythmic performances using traditional Persian percussion instruments.

Simorghs current repertoire comprises of several group pieces in various different moods and styles, held together by individual solo performances in between the ensemble arrangements.

"Simorgh were absolutely fantastic on Saturday in Bath. They performed beautifully and the audience loved it. A part that seemed to get people into a complete trance was the solo Daf, which seemed to be especially very popular with the British people among the audience! All I can say is that this group of young musicians are AMAZING! So take my word for it, go and see them if you get a chance!"
